Captain Charles Mabbott
Charles was born in Newport way back in 1856 the eldest son of
Charles Mabbott born in Almondsbury.
He "fled" from Welsh Wales and landed in Newlyn a fishing
village in Cornwall (England) where he met and secured the hand of
Elizabeth Steer, daughter of a comparatively wealthy fishing fleet
owner.
They produced an interesting family, which ties many of us together.
First came Charles about which little is known. I have him down as a
schoolmaster who having married Maggie Pascoe moved to Canada and
eventually died in Vancouver. Today's link is David Rawlinson.
Next came Howell who seems to have been the jewel in Captain Charles'
crown. He inherited his father's wealth and became Mayor of Penzance a
few times as well as having an area, near the railway station, still
referred to as Mabbott's yard. Geri Podskalny will claim him as her
line.
Next came Jim (Tiger) who John Mason will remember as his Grandfather.
He was profoundly deaf by the time I remember him. He was a tailor by
trade, perhaps more correctly referred to as a Gentleman's outfitter.
During the Second World War he and my Grandfather went back to work to
cover for the "boys" who were overseas defending the Empire.
My Grandfather appears third from left in the back row. He married a
fisherman's daughter from Newlyn and although she was comparatively well
off, the chip on the shoulder as regards to the "well to do"
Mabbott's leaves a memory to this day.
The "girls" Sarah, Lilly, Eliza and Winifred I remember
vaguely from visits they made for tea with my Grandparents.
